SUSSEX ARTIST FOLLOWS IN J.M.W. TURNER’S FOOTSTEPS FOR NEW EXHIBITION AT PETWORTH HOUSE

Dawn to Dusk exhibition: Saturday 3 July – Sunday 19 September 2021

This summer award-winning Sussex landscape painter Lucy Marks unveils her solo exhibition at the National Trust’s Petworth House and Park from Saturday 3 July – Sunday 19 September 2021. Visitors can discover 55 paintings in oil and watercolour of the Deer Park at Petworth, which was designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and provides the inspiration for this exhibition held in the Servants’ Quarters at Petworth House. Nestled in the South Downs, Petworth House and Park offers a wealth of encouragement for art lovers. Works by an array of admired artists are on display, including those by famous landscape painters John Constable and J.M.W. Turner.
Lucy Marks explains how these artists have inspired her as she painted the dramatic landscape of the 700-acre Deer Park: “The title of the exhibition, Dawn to Dusk, is a nod to Turner, who regularly visited and painted Petworth. His work featured sunsets and sunrises in both watercolour and oil. As a landscape painter I, too, wanted to capture the cycle of a day at Petworth, from its dreamy sunrises to its gentle and dramatic sunsets.” Lucy uses her painting skills to create dynamic compositions and interpretations of the landscape around her, especially focusing on dramatic skies, something which Petworth Park offers in abundance. Painting outdoors in all elements, a spot of rain won’t put her off, she truly experiences the landscape as she creates her artwork. The process involves starting by working outside, en plein air, drawing sketches in watercolour and oil from the landscape, then creating the final piece in the studio.

Throughout Dawn to Dusk on set dates Lucy will also be carrying out demonstrations and meet the artist sessions where visitors can chat to her about her work and painting techniques. The exhibition artworks will be available to purchase at Petworth House alongside the exhibition catalogue or online via Lucy Marks’ website.

Interpreting the landscape through paint, Lucy hopes to invite visitors to see the park in a new light. She explains: “Walking round the show is a bit like exploring Petworth Park and Garden. There are leafy quiet spots through to majestic sweeps of wildness, some tight and busy areas, and some more relaxed open spaces.”

Adam Hastie, General Manager, Petworth House and Park says: “We are excited to be hosting Lucy Mark’s solo exhibition here at Petworth. The Deer Park is a majestic landscape, and Lucy’s artwork captures the special atmosphere of the place brilliantly. She really has ‘followed in the footsteps’ of Turner, creating paintings that were inspired by Petworth itself.”

Lucy Mark’s exhibition Dawn to Dusk will be at Petworth House and Park from Saturday 3 Jul – Sunday 19 September 2021, 10:30am-4:30pm. Visitors are required to purchase a ticket to the site to enter, free for National Trust members.
