Located on England’s South Coast and overlooking The Solent. Gosport has 24 miles of waterfront, panoramic beaches, impressive naval heritage, diverse sailing & watersports, plus plenty of waterfront eateries. If your group is interested in things nautical, they will definitely find much to enjoy in Gosport.
They can find out what lurks beneath the waves at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, On-board HMS Alliance (the only WW2 era British submarine left in the world) ex –submariners will tell your group what life was like living on a cramped submarine for weeks at a time. The Museum also has Britain’s first submarine Holland 1 and X24 a midget submarine from the Second World War. The ‘Silent and Secret’ exhibition show’s our nation’s sea nuclear deterrent, and tells the stories of those who served underwater for months at time to protect us.
At Explosion - Museum of Naval Firepower they can find out how the Royal Navy won so many sea battles throughout the centuries. See the cannons and guns, shells and munitions, mines, torpedoes and modern missiles that armed the Royal Navy. There's even an atomic bomb, whose ominous hulk meets visitors on arrival. The exhibits are brought to life with dramatic audio-visual effects and interactive hands-on displays as you imagine you firing the big guns in the middle of a naval battle.
At the Diving Museum at Stokes Bay your group can see one of the best collections of diving equipment in the world and hear about how some divers were literally squashed into their helmets, burst their lungs or were crippled by the ‘bends’.
Just along the seafront at Lee-on-the-Solent is the Hovercraft Museum with the world’s largest collection of hovercraft. There are over 55 Hovercraft, including the large cross channel ones, and ones used in James Bond movies and Top Gear. Special guided group tours can be arranged on request.
At Little Woodham 1642 Living History Village you can meet the ‘villagers’ dressed in period costumes demonstrating the skills of the blacksmith, potter, lace-makers and weavers.
Gosport Museum and Art Gallery hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions, and shines a spotlight on the town’s heritage and history.
Gosport waterfront is an attraction in its own right. Overlooking the harbour entrance, there is a constant bustle of yachts, ferries and warships sailing in and out. You’ll find a choice of waterfront bars and restaurants to relax in too. You can even book a brewery tour at Powder Monkey Brewery and sample some of their fine ales.
