Darlington Hippodrome is a beautifully restored Edwardian era theatre with a full programme of fantastic shows including smash-hit musicals, top comedians, world-class musicians, internationally renowned ballet and much much more.
We love to welcome groups and special groups rates are available for many top shows – including our famous Christmas panto!
Built in 1907 and recently refurbished in 2017 in a £13.7 million pound project that brought 21st century facilities to a beautiful Edwardian theatre. The project included the restoration of the distinctive exterior of the theatre and the beautiful Edwardian auditorium, a modern new entrance and promenade gallery, celebrating its heritage, the creation of a stunning vaulted function room in the former water tower, as well as improved seating with more leg room and disabled access, including two lifts providing access to all levels both front and back of house.
Now it regularly welcomes top touring shows such as Blood Brothers, Strictly Ballroom, Rock of Ages, The Mousetrap, Heathers The Musical and The Commitments. As well as world class musicians, TV comedians, international ballet and much more in a wide-ranging artistic programme.
The theatre boasts its own welcoming café called The Hippo Lounge where you enjoy a selection of hot and cold sandwiches, paninis, snacks and sweet treats. Our sandwiches are made fresh daily on locally sourced bread with vegan and gluten free options available. Other local snacks and sweet treats such as sausage rolls, steak pies and doughnuts are also sourced from the area. Even the milk in our barista coffees and teas come from cows who live just down the road!
Our box office and Hippo Lounge café are open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.
