Explore the Viking-Age City
Climbing aboard a time capsule for an unforgettable trip back to 10th century York – then known as Jorvik – to meet the traders, settlers and craftspeople who inhabited this very spot. Listen to a Norse couple arguing over what to have for dinner, take in smells from fish to woodsmoke and spot the famous Bogar – who has been sitting on the toilet since the day it opened! The sights, sounds and smells of the Viking Age are brought vividly back to life as you journey back 1,000 years.

The Silverdale Hoard that has gone on display at Jorvik

The Silverdale Hoard is a collection of over 200 pieces of silver jewellery and coins discovered near Silverdale, Lancashire, England, in September 2011.[1] The items were deposited together in and under a lead container buried about 16 inches (41 cm) underground which was found in a field by a metal detectorist. It is believed to date to around AD 900, a time of intense conflict between the Anglo-Saxons and the Danish settlers of northern England. The hoard is one of the largest Viking hoards ever discovered in the UK. It has been purchased by Lancashire Museums Service and has been displayed at Lancaster City Museum and the Museum of Lancashire in Preston. Silverdale Hoard
This Spring is the last chance to see the Silverdale Hoard at JORVIK. One of the largest Viking hoards ever discovered in the UK has been loaned to JORVIK Viking Centre by Lancashire County Museum Service.
Discovered in a lead container in Lancashire, the Silverdale Hoard is comprised of over 200 pieces of silver rings, hacksilver and coins of Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Arabic origin.
The hoard provides a fascinating window into 900AD – a time of intense conflict between the Anglo Saxons and Danes in the north of England, and a time when the trading town of Jorvik was at its peak. Exhibition at JORVIK until 10th May 2023.
