We are thrilled to offer you and your groups some festive cheer with our discounted group rates for our Santa Specials this Christmas.

Families can climb on board and make some enchanting memories on this ultimate festive experience on board our Santa Specials. Starting from either Pickering or Grosmont Station, passengers will enjoy an enchanting Christmas ride and see Mr Claus and his jolly helpers.

Dates: 25 & 26 November 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 & 24 December.

Departure Times Pickering: 09:55 am, 11.25 am, 1.00 pm and 2.55 pm.
Departure Times Grosmont: 10:00 am, 11.30 am, 1.05 pm and 3.00 pm.
Location: Departing from either Pickering or Grosmont Station.
Fare: £25 per person for bookings of 20+ passengers. All Children aged 1-15 receive a present.

Wednesday 22nd December 2021 Picture Credit Charlotte Graham Picture Shows Locomotive Lampton Colliery No 29 Steam up the Goathland Pass into Goathland station made famous for the Harry Potter Series pulling the Santa Express Built in 1904 by Kitson of Leeds, Works Number 4263, for Lambton Collieries, No. 29 was the first 0-6-2T to be employed on that system and was later joined by No.5. No. 29 was also overhauled at Philadelphia in 1968, by which time the ‘main line’ running over BR tracks had ceased and it was made redundant with the other remaining steam locomotives on 15 February, 1969. With 65 years in service she must be a one of the longest-working steam locomotives in the UK Having returned to steam after overhaul for the NYMR 40th Anniversary in 2013, No. 29 has been in frequent use until late-2014 when a crack was discovered in her cylinder block and she was withdrawn pending a replacement. Completed for the 2019 Annual Steam Gala she is now available for traffic. Staff and volunteers working hard to keep the Santa Specials Running despite covid affecting both staff and passengers, with the last steaming week of the season and the final Santa Train runs on Christmas Eve 2021
Santa Specials at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
Saturday 4th December 2021 Picture Credit Charlotte Graham Picture Shows A steam locomotive travels on a cold Saturday in December doing Santa Specials, travelling between Goathland and Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway LMS 5428 was built in 1937 by Armstrong Whitworth at Newcastle, one of an order for 227 such locomotives, the largest order ever placed by a British railway company with a private firm. A further 100 ‘Black Fives’ were also built by the firm. Leeds Holbeck was one of the nearest depots to the North Fast to which they were allocated, and 45428 was one of that depot’s allocation. As well as working main line trains, Holbeck provided Class 5s for summer specials from the West Riding to Whitby, via York, Malton, Pickering and what is now the NYMR; thus ‘Black Fives’ became a familiar sight through Newtondale and it is possible that 45428 was one of them. The locomotive hauled the last steam worked London bound express from Bradford to Leeds on I October 1967 and was withdrawn a week later when steam traction was abandoned in the Leeds area — and indeed throughout the North East region. Preserved in 1967 and named Eric Treacy after the former Bishop of Wakefield, an eminent railway photographer.
